Honors ICORE Experience - AI-Powered Smartwatch for K-12 Classroom Support

Growth and Skill Development

Last spring, my team and I had the invaluable opportunity to participate in the Honors ICORE section, an experience that profoundly enhanced both my technical and collaborative skills. The objective was to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) and large language learning models to develop a cutting-edge smartwatch capable of monitoring and collecting various health metrics related to stress, particularly in a grade school classroom environment.

Throughout the semester, we underwent rigorous training and lectures on AI, chatbots, and machine learning. These sessions provided us with the theoretical foundation to understand the underlying principles of large language models and their applications. Beyond theoretical learning, this experience allowed me to develop crucial hands-on skills, such as:

  • AI Integration: I gained deep insights into how AI can be integrated into everyday products, particularly in health and education. This broadened my understanding of AI's practical applications and potential for social impact.

  • Team Collaboration and Leadership: Working in a diverse team, I honed my teamwork and communication skills, learning how to integrate ideas from different disciplines, and leading sub-teams on aspects of the project such as product design and the user interface.

  • Problem-Solving and Creativity: The project demanded innovative thinking as we crafted a product tailored to help students manage emotional stress. This required creative problem-solving and constant iteration to ensure the product was both functional and user-friendly.

  • Project Management: We worked on deadlines, allocated tasks, and handled setbacks as a cohesive team, gaining valuable project management skills that are essential for real-world applications.

Connection to Career Goals

The skills and knowledge I developed during the ICORE experience directly align with my career goals in the philanthropic sector, specifically in the field of applying AI to the workplace and developing faster ways to implement funding, find partnerships, and create more meaningful and equitable experiences for youth and underrepresented groups in their given communities. My ambition is to work at the intersection of technology, health, and education where I can contribute to creating innovative solutions that improve the well-being and learning experiences for all.

This project has given me firsthand experience with AI and machine learning, which are crucial components in today's tech landscape. As I aim to pursue a career in the realm of AI product development, the ICORE experience has provided me with a strong foundation in both the technical aspects of AI and the practical challenges of bringing a product or service to market. This blend of technical expertise and social responsibility is something I am eager to explore further in my future career.

Connecting to the Larger Narrative

This ICORE experience is a pivotal example of how my academic journey has shaped me into a well-rounded, innovative thinker. My ability to collaborate, think critically, and apply cutting-edge technologies to address real-world problems will be a cornerstone of my professional career. Complementing this, my research experience at Indiana University Indianapolis under the guidance of an esteemed professor deepened my skills in quantitative research and data analysis, particularly in the realm of youth philanthropy and its connection to civic engagement. I had the opportunity to examine program effectiveness through a data-driven lens, allowing me to understand the tangible impact of youth involvement in philanthropic efforts. Further enhancing this foundation, I completed a philanthropic studies capstone project with a local youth organization aiming to expand nationwide. Through this project, I compiled a comprehensive report that merged original research and existing data to support their strategic growth and demonstrate the scalability of their programming. These experiences underscore my commitment to using research, collaboration, and innovation to drive social impact.
